According to new research the cause of depression has been oversimplified by traditional medicine and the drugs developed to treat it miss the mark. One of the accepted markers for depression has been stress. Based on the molecular explanation of depression as the result of decreased levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine an dopamine, the current antidepressants aim to boost these neurotransmitters.

New research found that depression actually begins further up in the chain of events in the brain, so that anti-depressants focus on the effect, not the cause. The researches found evidence that stress is not a major cause of depression. They revealed that anti-depressants are not treating depression: they are treating stress.
