A young woman came to see me after consulting with a surgeon. Her lab report showed that she was suffering the pain of a gallstone. The surgeon recommended taking out her gallbladder.

I was curious. Nowadays gallstones that are within a certain size can be crushed, or dissolved, internally by allopathic doctors. Her stone seemed to be within these limits. I was also curious as to why the gallbladder should be removed as there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with it. She also suffered from heartburn and indigestion. So, if her gallbladder is gone, and all things remain the same, she would still suffer heartburn and indigestion, and then, something else will be sure to crop up because the digestive system itself hasn’t been addressed.

What to do? She wants to have the surgery. She will be prescribed a pill for heartburn and indigestion to be taken every day for the rest of her life. If she sees a holistic doctor at some point she might be prescribed digestive enzymes to be taken with every meal, again, for the rest of her life.

What is the big deal about having a gallbladder, you ask? The gall bladder is a muscular sac attached to the liver. The liver secretes bile into the gall bladder, where it is stored until needed by the body for digestion. Bile contains water, cholesterol, fats, bile salts, proteins, and bilirubin. Bile is discharged into the duodenum, where it aids the process of digestion, in particular, the digestion of fats.

What’s so important about gallstones? Gallstones are formed if the liquid bile contains too much cholesterol, bile salts, or bilirubin. Cholesterol stones are a symptom of excess estrogen (in this case, perhaps from pregnancy), obesity, diabetes, or high cholesterol in the blood.

So, there go the symptoms, and the organ. There won’t be any signs of dis-ease any more.

Does this mean that she won’t be producing gallstones anymore since the gallbladder doesn’t exist? No. She might very well produce gallstones again. It is very common. A close relative of mine had their gallbladder taken out about 25 years ago and has produced gallstones 4 times since then, each time having them taken out at the hospital.

One day, when she’s older, she’ll get a new diagnosis: “Metabolic Syndrome”. An acquired metabolic disorder that is simply a Fatty Oxidation Disorder – just as it sounds, a disorder affecting the metabolism of fat components. Metabolic Syndrome encompasses high cholesterol (fat in the blood), insulin resistance, excessive weight (especially around the waist), and hypothyroidism. Then, of course, there will be more pills for her to take.
